On this day in Coronado, ground was broken for the 90-bed, four-story Coronado Hospital building, with an adjacent 23-bed extended care unit. The construction is sited directly behind the old hospital on Soledad Pace. Construction was completed in two years. Earlier in the year, two large donations were made toward the construction of the hospital. Mrs. George Winzer of La Jolla, at the urging of her daughter, Coronado resident Frances Harpst, gave a gift of stocks which was sold and reinvested into government securities, totally about $2.2 million dollars. The second large gift was a bequest of $300,000 from Mrs. Walter Crosby, representing two-thirds of her total estate. THese two gifts totally $2.5 million dollars making the building of hospital debt-free and ensuring high-quality construction.
